Here’s the official blurb from the Pizza Express:
Arguably the most celebrated, in-demand, and talked about tenor saxophonist of his generation in contemporary jazz music, Walter Smith III makes his exciting debut at PizzaExpress as a leader. Known around the world by musicians and fans alike for his breathtaking and engaging improvisations, direct and instantly recognizable sound, and ground breaking albums (which blend tradition and modernity like few artists in this age), Smith has been the first call tenorist of choice for the likes of superstars Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride and Jason Moran, and has recently been seen touring the UK with Blue Note recording artist and new trend setter, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. He is joined by Christian Scott’s bandmates Mathew Stevens (guitar) and Jamire Williams (drums), as well as leading bassist Michael Janisch, a regular favourite at the club. These two nights are the band’s only London shows of a 15-date UK-wide tour. Not to be missed!
“…the development of his ideas can only be described as a journey that never ceases to lose momentum…” – Jazz Times.
