7th May 2020: #TBT – Rez Abbasi – Reviews of ‘A Throw of Dice’ from Jazzwise Magazine + Jazz a Babord

September 2019 saw the release of prolific New York guitarist Rez Abbasi‘s 13th album, A Throw of Dice in collaboration with  The Silent Group, an eminently creative ensemble comprised of Pawan Benjamin (tenor and soprano saxophones bansuri and western flutes), Jennifer Vincent (acoustic bass, cello), Rohan Khrishnamurthy (mridangam, ghatam, khanjira) and Jake Goldbas (kit).

Drawing on an impressive array of styles from Pakistani classical through rock to improvised jazz, the album’s eclectic sounds have been gathering excellent press coverage. On top of Abbasi appearing as JazzEd Magazine‘s cover feature for November/December, A Throw of Dice has since picked up positive coverage from Jazzwise Magazine and Jazz a Babord

Here are some highlights from the press:

“Bulging with gentle melodic themes and mantra-like grooves convincingly integrated with improvised material… Highly musical and engaging.”

“The cinematic nature of the pieces showcases brilliant melodic composition, by turn fragile, delicate, melancholic and dramatic.”
