20th January 2012: Saxophonist on the rise George Crowley to Debut on WWR with ‘Paper Universe’, audio samples and info now on the site.
Right now on the London creative music scene, one name pops up in many circles, and that name is George Crowley. He’s only in his mid twenties but plays with the maturity and character of someone twice his age, with an infectious tone and a very welcomed wit and elegance when improvising. He launches his debut recording right here with WWR, titled ‘Paper Universe’, and he’s appearing alongside his long time working quartet made up of some of the UK’s most talked about young musicians. With Kit Downes on piano, Calum Gourlay on bass, and James Maddren on drums, the quartet have been developing since their time together studying at London’s famed Royal Academy of Music, and Crowley and Downes go back as musical associates back into their teenage years. So the music reflects this personal relationship, almost scarily so in that on the first listen one would never guess that the album is made up of twenty somethings. This is not only a debut, but a very strong, mature statement by an artist who will no doubt solidify a place at the table of the premier creative artists of his generation today.
