Sara Serpa is a singer and composer who explores the voice as an instrument through her work. Her first appearance on Whirlwind Recordings comes on Matt Gold’s record Imagined Sky.
Serpa’s work draws from a variety of sources including literature, film, visual arts and nature. As a leader, she has produced and released ten albums, the most recent being 2020’s Recognition. Serpa has collaborated with an array of musicians including Ingrid Laubrock, Erik Friedlander, John Zorn, Nicole Mitchell, André Matos, Guillermo Klein, Okkyung Lee, Guillermo Klein, Linda May Han Oh, Kris Davis, Okkyung Lee, Sofía Rei, Matt Mitchell, Zeena Parkins, Mark Turner, David Virelles, Tyshawn Sorey, Nicole Mitchell, and Leo Genovese. She was voted Rising Star (in the Female Vocalist category) in the 2019 DownBeat Magazine Critics’ Poll, and is currently Artist-In-Residence at Park Avenue Armory in New York.
