1st June 2015: Prior to Phil Robson launching ‘The Cut Off Point’ at The Vortex on Sat 6th June, the album receives more reviews including 4* from All About Jazz and makes The Guardian’s ‘playlist’.
The ever-searching, eclectic guitarist Phil Robson has released four contrasting solo records to date and is known throughout the world for his contribution to the long-running quartet Partisans (their release Swamp, won Album Of The Year in the UK’s 2015 Parliamentary Jazz Awards). As sideman he’s performed with Kenny Wheeler, Mark Turner, Billy Hart, Barbara Streisand, Django Bates and Christine Tobin, amongst others.
Now with a recently-formed organ trio, Robson, Ross Stanley (Hammond organ) and Gene Calderazzo (drums) release their debut The Cut Off Point.
The album is being launched at The Vortex on Saturday 6th June (details and tickets) and the album continues to collect great reviews. Here are some of the latest highlights:
“British guitar phenomenon Phil Robson hardly needs any introduction, save that his new musical departure is realized by an organ trio offering a smörgåsbord of exciting and imaginative compositions.”
4 Stars, All About Jazz
“Whilst comparisons with Lifetime or John McLaughlin’s 1994 album, After the Rain with Joey DeFrancesco and Elvin Jones may seem inevitable, the vast majority of the music here owes little to these groups. Robson is his own man and this trio has successfully achieved what it set out to do, making for a very satisfying album indeed.”
4 Stars, All About Jazz (full review)
“Fine British guitarist Phil Robson has found his own contemporary way back into the Hammond tradition with organist Ross Stanley and drummer Gene Calderazzo.”
The Guardian ‘Playlist’ (feature)
“Rapid intensity inviting terrific soloing all round.”
