16th October 2015: Press highlights from the latest round of reviews for Phil Robson’s ‘The Cut Off Point’ include 4 stars from The Observer, The Irish Times and Herald Scotland.

The ever-searching, eclectic guitarist Phil Robson has released four contrasting solo records to date and is known throughout the world for his contribution to the long-running quartet Partisans (their release Swamp won Album Of The Year in the 2015 Parliamentary Jazz Awards in the UK where he’s based). As a sideman he’s performed with Kenny Wheeler, Mark Turner, Billy Hart, Barbara Streisand, Django Bates, Christine Tobin, among others and now with his recently established organ trio, he has released The Cut Off Point.

Here are the highlights from the latest press reviews for The Cut Off Point:

“An excellent album that honours the much loved tradition of the organ trio yet still manages to find something fresh to say within the format.”
4 Stars, The Jazz Mann (full review)

“The range of tempos and moods in eight numbers is more than impressive, from the floating, indefinite Astral to the catchy Thief and the dauntingly angular title piece.”
4 Stars, The Observer (full review)

“But there is also a darker, more contemporary edge to this powerful new trio, and on a set of his own compositions (with one Dave Liebman cover), the guitarist – egged on by his two creative, ever-attentive companions – proves himself a fearless experimenter, capable of striking out into the unknown and finding new textures in a classic format.”
4 Stars, The Irish Times (full review)

“Players such as Phil Robson are pointing the way forward, and this fourth album from one of the current scene’s finest guitarists, while capable of revelling in the soulful glories of the format’s more conventional approaches, is packed with fresh statements as well as presenting a deeply satisfying variety of moods.”
The Herald, Scotland (full review)
