Today marks one year since Natacha Atlas released her Whirlwind debut, Strange Days, an effortless genre-fluid record that reflects Atlas’s background. Both Atlas and musical partner Samy Bishai felt drawn to the idea of combining Arabic scales and textures with the changes and harmonic language of jazz, and this idea comes to the fore in Strange Days.
