20th April 2016: Listen again to BBC Radio 3 ‘Jazz Now’ as Soweto Kinch sits in on masterclass with Patrick Cornelius + latest reviews for ‘While We’re still Young’
Featuring Patrick Cornelius – alto/soprano saxes, flute, compositions, Jason Palmer – trumpet, John Ellis – tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, Nick Vayenas – trombone, Miles Okazaki – guitar, Gerald Clayton – piano, Peter Slavov – bass and Kendrick Scott – drums, While We’re Still Young is the sixth and latest album by the critically acclaimed, award-winning saxophonist and composer Patrick Cornelius and breathes life into a suite of new original music inspired by the universally-treasured poetry of English literary icon A. A. Milne.
During his recent Euro launch tour, Patrick took the opportunity to work with students on his own compositions.
BBC Radio 3 recorded one such event and here, Soweto Kinch joins him for a masterclass at Birmingham Conservatoire, where he is working with young players on music from While We’re Still Young. They discuss what it means to be a jazz composer today, and explore tricks of the trade for alto saxophonists: Listen again
Here are the highlights from reviews still coming in for the album from North America and Europe:
“An entire album peppered with goosebumps-inducing moments… Cornelius’s music and messages resonate broadly and vividly, reminding any listener of what’s most precious to us all.”
