Joe Lovano

Profile

Joe Lovano is one of the most celebrated saxophonists of his generation. He adds grace to ‘Leye’s Dance’ on Michael Olatuja’s Afrocentric celebration Lagos Pepper Soup.

Lovano remains at the forefront of post-bop jazz, appearing alongside contemporaries such as Dave Douglas, Marilyn Crispell and Marcin Wasilewski, and most recently with Crispell and Castaldi on Garden of Expression. At Berklee School of Music in the 1960s, he met future collaborators John Scofield, Bill Frisell and Kenny Werner. He later toured with Jonnie Smith and Jack McDuff, settling in New York City and becoming one of the city’s most vital creative forces. Since his signature to Blue Note, Lovano has recorded a spate of well-received albums, winning a Grammy for his 2000 release 52nd Street Themes.
