8th February 2021: Announcing the release of ‘Tales from The Jacquard’ by Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra, out June 25th
We’re delighted to announce that saxophonist, composer and arranger Julian Siegel will release his new album for jazz orchestra, Tales from the Jacquard on Whirlwind Recordings – releasing on June 25th.
The nineteen piece all-star Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra made its debut with a major UK Tour in March 2017. The tour was commissioned and produced by Derby Jazz and Right Tempo with support from Arts Council England ‘Grants for the Arts’ and EMJAZZ. This ‘handpicked’ stellar line-up features some of Julian’s favourite players on the UK and European scene and represents a fulfilment of a long standing wish to bring this line up together.
The Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra‘s debut UK Tour featured Julian’s new music for Jazz Orchestra, from expansions of music for small band to a new suite commissioned by Derby Jazz specially composed for this debut tour. Tales from the Jacquard draws inspiration from the lace-making process and the Jacquard cards, which controlled the lace knitting machines. (Julian’s parents and family ran a lace manufacturing business in Nottingham’s lace market for 50 years).
The band conducted by Nick Smart, includes saxophonists Stan Sulzmann, Jason Yarde and Tori Freestone, trumpeters Henry Lowther and Claus Stoetter (invited over from the NDR Big Band, Hamburg), trombonist Mark Nightingale and Guitarist Mike Outram, all based around the dynamic and creative rhythm section of his long standing group the Julian Siegel Quartet featuring Liam Noble, Oli Hayhurst and Gene Calderazzo. The Jazz Orchestra toured the UK on a week of gigs including concerts at Ronnie Scott’s Club, Soho as part of Jazzwise Magazine’s 20th Anniversary celebrations, Birmingham Town Hall, Derby Guildhall, Lakeside Arts Nottingham, Terry O’Toole Theatre Lincoln and De Montfort University Leicester. During this tour the Orchestra was recorded live at Lakeside Arts, Nottingham for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 ‘Jazz Now’.
