9th January 2020: Quinsin Nachoff at New York’s Jazz Gallery 9th/10th Jan + latest press highlights including Bandcamp’s ‘Best of 2019’ feature

Saxophonist Quinsin Nachoff is appearing with Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society in four shows this Thursday and Friday at New York’s Jazz Gallery. You can find out more: here

Quinsin’s recent release Path of Totality is an extraordinarily colorful palette of conceptual reasoning and musical expression. Working with saxophonist David Binney, pianist/keyboardist Matt Mitchell, drummers Kenny Wollesen and Nate Wood, plus guest artists, saxophonist/composer Nachoff’s overarching inspiration arose from the moon’s total eclipse of the sun in 2017. That event became a dramatic, natural metaphor for the band’s evolutionary creative process.

Path of Totality continues to receive great reviews in the worldwide music press and has appeared in several ‘Best of Year’ lists. Here are the highlights:

“There’s no doubting its excellence on both a compositional and performance level. A remarkable achievement from all concerned.

“Inspired by a total solar eclipse, the saxophonist fills his compositions with the grandeur and wonder associated with celestial events, giving the music the dual qualities of a hyper-focused sprawling majesty. It’s as if he’s trying to take in the vastness of it all while drilling down on each tiny detail. It’s an outstanding work in its totality, and fascinating in each individual moment.”

Winnipeg Free Press: Albums of the Decade

“A recording of distinction, with a wide musical palette, put together with great attention to form and detail and performed with tremendous skill.”
Artsfuse: Best Jazz Recordings and Live Concerts 2019 (feature)

#8 in Best Jazz Albums of 2019 (feature)

“Overflowing with imaginative solutions, techniques and arrangements, animated by a mood that does not have many terms of comparison with other contemporary jazz records. And if the compositions are creative and intellectually stimulating, the merit lies not only in the excellent writing of Quinsin Nachoff, but also and above all in the incredible interpretation of the musicians.”
